Made in Paris in 1886, the lens saw forty years of service in Alaska before being brought to the Peninsula. The 67 foot high tower is perched on a cliff, resulting in a light source 197 feet above sea level, which can be seen twenty miles at sea. This lighthouse is inaccessible to the public, but can be viewed from the Cabrillo Beach area, San Pedro Breakwater or by boat. This Victorian-style lighthouse with the 40-foot-tall tower is near San Luis Obispo and the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The lighthouse was constructed in 1890 and is currently owned by PG&E. Volunteers provide a 3-hour tour of the area on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays throughout the year. If you plan on seeing this lighthouse up close, you will need a reservation.

Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse has experienced several changes over the years. A radiobeacon was placed in commission at the station on May 21, 1926. As the community and “light noise” on the hills behind the lighthouse grew, a green translucent cover was placed over the lens in 1932 to change the characteristic from flashing white to flashing green. The old deep-throated two-tone fog horn, affectionately known to locals as “Moaning Maggie,” was replaced by a higher-pitched single-tone horn in 1959.
The Lighthouse is currently undergoing major renovations and the tower is closed for visitors, but you can still find the trip worthwhile.
